ADVISING

I can't seem to add myself as an advisor for a student in Inspire.

Advisors must be assigned in Banner rather than Inspire. After assignments are made in Banner, Inspire will update overnight and the new assignment will surface the next day.

I can't find links to the degree audit or to delete an advising pin.

At this time, Inspire does not have the capacity to host external links (i.e. degree audit) or to delete an advising pin. These functions will continue to exist in MyDU.

I can't figure out how to help a student plan for a future term in Inspire.

Inspire is not a degree planning tool. Advisors will continue to utilize the Degree Audit and Course Scheduling features for degree and course planning.

How do I know who my advising notes are shared with?

When adding an advising note for a given student, a grey box labeled "note privacy" will appear next to the student's name. You can see who the advising note will be visible to by clicking the listed blue unit names (i.e. Undergraduate Academic Resources, Programs, and Advising).

Why can't I save an advising note as "private"

Inspire has been configured such that all notes are "shared" to facilitate the tracking, communication, and support of students.

COMMUNICATION

If I message a student through Inspire and they respond, will that go to Outlook or Inspire? And if I respond in Outlook, will that be captured in Inspire?

If a student responds to a message originated in Inspire, the message will go to both your Inspire inbox and your Outlook inbox. You can respond to the student in either Inspire or Outlook and both will be captured in Inspire.

FILTERS

What constitutes an "active" student versus an "inactive" student?

Active

  1. Currently enrolled in a live term

Inactive

  1. Incoming admitted students not yet enrolled for a future term
  2. Incoming admitted students enrolled in a future term
  3. Students who were previously registered for a section in a term that was active in the last 3 calendar years (but not currently enrolled in a live term)

Why are there multiple filters for options for one minor?

Minor listings cannot be separated from the college code at this time. As such, each minor has multiple options (one for each college/degree).

Can I search for students using "or" criteria (i.e. psychology majors or psychology minors)?

No, the filters currently use "and" logic, only showing results for students that meet all selected criteria.

GENERAL

How quickly does Inspire update information?

Actions taken within Inspire will update instantly (i.e. adding a note, messaging a student, etc.). However, information coming from Banner updates into Inspire on a nightly (not instantaneous) basis. As such, anything added/removed/changed in Banner today will not surface in Inspire until tomorrow.

REPORTS

When I run a report, I'm getting zero results

When you run a report, the filters automatically default to "My Students" at the top – be sure to choose "All Students" to receive results from all students.

When I run an advising note report, I can see the titles of the advising note, but not the content.

When running an advising note report, the report results within Inspire will not show the actual advising note content. However, you can download the report and the advising note content will appear in a separate column in the report.

STUDENT PROFILE & SUMMARY CARD

Why does the profile of a graduate student have a "major(s)" listed?

Banner captures and classifies degree programs in different ways. While graduate students do not typically have "major(s)," Banner uses the "major(s)" field to distinguish different degree programs.

Why am I seeing graduate advisor options for undergraduate students on the student summary card (or undergraduate advisor types for graduate students)?

In the configuration of Inspire, it was determined that logic is not available to only show undergraduate advisor types for undergraduates and conversely, graduate advisor types for graduate students. All advisor types will appear on the student summary card, but only undergraduate advisors should populate for undergraduates and vice versa for graduate students.

The start term for a student is listed incorrectly.

If a student has begun multiple programs at DU (i.e. was a DU undergraduate student who is now a DU graduate student, etc.), Inspire currently only brings in the very first start term for a given student.

Does Inspire support preferred names?

Yes, preferred names surface in Inspire both on the student summary card, and next to the student's name. If the student has listed a preferred name, the preferred name will appear in parentheses next to their name.

I'm not seeing any Engagement Opportunities for graduate students.

The Engagement Opportunities functionality currently only exists for undergraduate students (but will apply to graduate students soon).

The grades that are listed for a student from Canvas are not up-to-date.

The data from Canvas has a 2-day lag time. As a result, information from Canvas (login data and grade data) will not appear in Inspire until 2 days later. Thus, if an instructor enters a grade on Tuesday, the grade will not show correctly in Inspire until Thursday.
